UP food cooperatives getting improvement grants

MARQUETTE, MI— USDA Rural Development is working through the Healthy Food Financing Initiative to improve healthy food access in rural Michigan communities.

The Keweenaw Cooperative in Hancock will use a $200,000 award to support the relocation and expansion of the co-op's existing operations. Northwind Natural Food Co-op of Ironwood is getting more than $199,000 to make needed repairs, upgrades and other improvements. And Lakeshore Depot in Marquette will use a $200,000 award to assist with the final phase of its expansion.

Rural Development is partnering with the Reinvestment Fund, which serves as the National Fund Manager for USDA.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
