Energy summit addresses citizen concerns

MARQUETTE, MI--   Residents had a chance to ask questions about local power generation at the U.P. Energy Summit held at NMU Wednesday.

The Michigan Public Service Commission fielded questions on a range of topics, but the fate of the Presque Isle Power Plant was foremost in many people’s minds.  The Wisconsin Electric Power Company facility is due to retire in 2020, and residents are wondering where their electricity will come from.

MPSC Chairman John Quackenbush says officials are working on solutions for new, long-term power generation and transmission in the Upper Peninsula.  He says while the answer isn’t completely clear, they’re making progress in executing tentative agreements to make sure electricity will be available and dependable in the area for years to come.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
