Tech marches for stronger punishment against threat poster

HOUGHTON, MI--   Members of the Michigan Technological University community marched for justice Sunday.

Hundreds of students, staff, and others marched from campus to the Houghton County Courthouse in response to the arrest of a person who posted an online threat to African-Americans.  The subject will be charged with disturbing the peace.

Protestors say the charge should be more severe.

Some marchers held signs saying, “Our lives are not a joke.”  They say they intend to make Prosecutor Michael Makinen aware of how they feel and to establish peace.

The suspect will be arraigned Monday morning.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
