Suspect shot by deputy in Ishpeming Township dies

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, MI--   An Ishpeming Township man shot by a Marquette County Sheriff’s deputy Thursday morning has died.

In a press release Sheriff Michael Lovelace says the deputy was called around 8:50 a.m. to the 200 block of Silver Street on a report that someone had called UPHS Marquette, said he was in severe pain, and indicated he was going to take his own life.

Upon arrival the deputy encountered an agitated and confrontational elderly man.  The officer tried to talk to the man to calm him down, but the subject apparently leveled a shotgun at the deputy and refused to lower it.  The deputy discharged his weapon at the man and immediately called an ambulance.

The Sheriff’s Office says the man was taken to UPHS Marquette and later pronounced dead.

Investigation into the incident will be turned over to the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post and reviewed by the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete.  The identity of the deputy will be withheld until the process concludes.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct its own administrative review of the incident according to its policy regarding the lethal use of force.

Lovelace said his department offered its condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family of the victim.  He said they’re also glad the deputy wasn’t injured.

Assisting at the scene were the Ishpeming Police Department, Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post, the Michigan State Police Forensic Lab, and UPHS Bell EMS.
