Power station in Marquette to be demolished

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   A power station in south Marquette that burned its last pieces of coal in 2018 is scheduled to be demolished this year.

The Shiras Steam Plant was the main supply of electrical power to the Marquette area for about five decades. Marquette Board of Light and Power Chairman Tom Tourville says the land where the plant sits along Lake Superior is to be re-purposed for community use.

The plant was turned off last June. The city-owned utility is instead is relying on the Marquette Energy Center, which uses natural gas for fuel.
