Census: Big population drops in Upper Peninsula

UNDATED (AP)--   Figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show some of Michigan’s largest percentage population losses over the past decade are in the Upper Peninsula, while three of the four most populous counties in the Lower Peninsula gained people.

The U.P. for years has struggled through job losses tied to downturns in the manufacturing and mining industries. Luce County had a population loss of 19.5 percent from 2010 to 2020, while Ontonagon County dropped 14.2 percent over that time. Gogebic County saw its population tumble by 12.5 percent.

Census figures released in April show Michigan's overall population increased slightly from 2010 to last year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
