1940 shipwreck found off Keweenaw in Lake Superior

KEWEENAW, MI— A World War II-era shipwreck has been found in Lake Superior off the Keweenaw.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society says the 244-foot bulk carrier Arlington was discovered in over 600 feet of water about 35 miles north of the peninsula.

On April 30th of 1940, the Arlington left Port Arthur, Ontario fully loaded with wheat en route to Owen Sound, Ontario. Dense fog turned into a storm and the Arlington started to take on water. Everyone was able to safely abandon ship except Captain “Tatey Bug” Burke. Reports indicate that he was near the pilothouse of his ship and waved at the rescue ship Collingwood minutes before the Arlington went down. People have speculated since the sinking why Burke didn’t leave with the rest of the crew.

Shipwreck researcher Dan Fountain discovered the shipwreck in 2023. The Shipwreck Society helped him identify the vessel as the Arlington.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
