Missing steamship discovered off Whitefish Point.

WHITEFISH POINT, MI— A wooden steamship that went missing in Lake Superior has been found.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society says the Adella Shores was discovered more than 40 miles northwest of Whitefish Point in over 650 feet of water.

Built in 1894, the 195-foot, 735-ton wooden steamer was owned by the Shores Lumber Company and named after the owner’s daughter, Adella. The ship sank twice in 15 years in shallow waters. It was refloated each time and put back into service.

The Shores went to the bottom of Lake Superior on May 1st, 1909 in a fierce gale. There were no survivors.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
