Officials release names of deceased Isle Royale hikers

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI— The names of two campers found dead on Isle Royale in June have been made public.

On Tuesday the Keweenaw County Clerk’s Office released death certificates for Bradley Baird, 30, and his father John Baird, 60, both of downstate Salem Township. The certificates list Bradley as a writer and John as the president of a division of insurance company AmeriTrust.

On June 8, the National Park Service received reports of two possible deaths at a remote backcountry campground. Rangers hiked 11 miles overnight to South Lake Desor Campground and found the Bairds the next morning.

No definitive cause of death has been released; however, MLive reported last week the Keweenaw County Medical Examiner suspected it could be murder-suicide.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
