This fall, the Peter White Public Library will host a unique edition of North Words and Music, an event that blends poetry, storytelling, music, and surreal themes into an unforgettable evening of entertainment. Two key figures behind the event, B.G. Bradley, storyteller and poet, and Marty Achatz, U.P. Poet Laureate, came to our studios to discuss their upcoming show on September 30th.

During the interview, B.G. Bradley shared insights into the overarching theme of surreality that will guide this edition of North Words and Music. “The idea came from just observing how surreal our reality has become in recent years,” Bradley noted. "We want to explore not only surrealism in art but also how life itself feels surreal at times." Expect references to Salvador Dali and Lewis Carroll, alongside original works that tackle these themes head-on.

Marty Achatz also emphasized the event’s playful and thought-provoking approach, with contributions ranging from lighthearted poems to pieces that challenge the audience to view the world from a different perspective. “Poetry helps people see the world in a new way,” said Achatz. "We're not just aiming to entertain—though we want people to laugh and have a great time—but also to get them thinking about the strangeness of their own lives."

The North Words and Music events have built a loyal following over the years, with the September edition promising to deliver its signature blend of humor, soulfulness, and artistic collaboration. “In some ways, we like to think of ourselves as a local version of A Prairie Home Companion,” Bradley said, reflecting on their dedication to blending various art forms while keeping the audience engaged and entertained.

The audience can also expect poetry readings and performances by musicians like Linda Smith and Seamus Collins, who have composed music specifically for certain poems. Jackie Love, a local actress, will also add her own flair, bringing life to the more theatrical elements of the show.

The event will take place in the Peter White Public Library Community Room at 6:30 p.m. on September 30th and will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
