A discussion with Eliisa Gladwell and Quinn Skelly

IronArts is bringing a powerful production of "Spring Awakening" to Marquette, with performances set for November 11-14 at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. This unique venue change from the Vista Theater brings a new dimension to this celebrated rock musical, originally set in 19th-century Germany but deeply resonant with contemporary issues. Director Eliisa Gladwell and cast member Quinn Skelly, a senior at Northern Michigan University majoring in Acting, joined us in the studio to discuss what makes this production special.

"Spring Awakening follows the lives of adolescents coming of age in a repressive society," explains Gladwell. "The musical deals with identity, sexuality, love, and the tension between education and experience. While the setting is historical, the struggles are timeless and very relevant today."

Skelly, who plays Hanschen, delved into his character's journey. "Hanschen grapples with love and independence, exploring who he is. It's rewarding to see him connect with other characters like Ernst, finding balance in shared struggles," Skelly said. This exploration of identity within the confines of a strict society is mirrored across the characters' arcs.

Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Eliisa and Quinn about the show:

Performing at Ore Dock Brewing Company adds a unique flair to the show. "The darker, intimate space enhances the emotional intensity of the production," noted Gladwell. "Ore Dock has hosted cabarets and smaller performances, but this is its first full-length musical. It's an exciting milestone."

The juxtaposition of "Spring Awakening's" 19th-century German setting with modern rock music composed by Duncan Sheik creates an unforgettable experience. "The songs reveal the inner thoughts of the characters," said Gladwell. "When the music starts, the plot pauses, giving a glimpse into the characters' raw emotions."

The production also acknowledges its heavier themes, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, abortion, and suicide. To ensure the audience is supported, IronArts is organizing post-show talkbacks with local experts. "We’ve partnered with organizations like Pathways and the Women's Center and invited local psychologists to help guide discussions and offer resources," Gladwell explained. "The goal is to remind everyone they are not alone."

Gladwell concluded by expressing gratitude for the community's support, with special thanks to Marquette's LoveMarq Church and Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming for providing rehearsal space.
