Marquette County will glow with the festive spirit this December as the inaugural Winter Light Festival takes center stage. Presented by the Marquette Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Travel Marquette, and the City of Marquette, the month-long celebration packages together beloved seasonal events and dazzling new attractions, creating a holiday experience that is both memorable and community-centered.
The festival builds upon the success of a signature event: the Holiday Lasers on the Dock, which returns for its fourth year. According to Susan Estler (CEO of Travel Marquette), the lasers began as a standalone effort to bring light to Marquette’s darkest winter months. Over time, the idea grew into a larger celebration.
“Travel Marquette started with the lasers four years ago,” Estler said. “We worked with the DDA and Marquette Arts and Culture to expand the concept. Bundling everything together as the Winter Light Festival felt like the perfect way to celebrate the season.”
The Winter Light Festival boasts a lineup that mixes tradition with innovation:
- Holiday Lasers on the Dock: Running from November 28 to December 28, with a grand finale laser show on New Year’s Eve, visitors can enjoy choreographed lights paired with a custom playlist accessible via QR code.
- "Oscillation" Art Installation: A world-class interactive public art installation at Marquette Commons from December 10 to January 5. Originally featured at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Oscillation combines light and sound in an engaging experience.
- Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting: On December 13, downtown Marquette will host a holiday parade culminating in the city’s traditional tree lighting, complete with a magical fire performance.
- Yule Market: On December 13 and 14, this holiday marketplace invites shoppers to explore local artisan goods and winter produce while supporting small businesses.
- Community Light Initiative: Residents and visitors are encouraged to decorate their homes, businesses, and neighborhoods, spreading light and cheer throughout Marquette County.
Listen to Kurt Hauswirth's interview with Susan Estler:
Estler expressed enthusiasm about the festival’s inclusivity and collaboration. “This time of year can be quite dark, literally and figuratively, so we’re thrilled to bring light and creativity to the community,” she said. “We wanted to create something for everyone — families, visitors, and residents alike.”
She highlighted the importance of partnerships between Travel Marquette, the DDA, and the City of Marquette, along with contributions from local artists and businesses. “It’s about showcasing the balance between outdoor recreation and arts and culture that makes Marquette special,” Estler said.
As the festival debuts, its organizers are already envisioning the future. “We hope to grow this festival year by year,” Estler noted. “From new art installations to enhancing traditional events, we want to keep bringing joy and light to the winter season.”
The festivities will culminate with a New Year’s Eve celebration, including a ball drop and laser show that promises to close 2024 with brilliance.
