A conversation with organizer Jon Teichman

Marquette’s community vinyl tradition is back as the Ore Dock Brewing Company hosts its first record show of 2025. From March 27th to 30th, music lovers can dig through crates of vinyl, CDs, cassette tapes, and even eight-track tapes at this four-day event, now in its 12th year.

Jon Teichman, an event organizer and advisor for the NMU Vinyl Record Club, describes the show as more than just a sale—it’s a gathering for the music-loving community. “We’re coming out of hibernation,” Teichman says. “It’s really become an event you want to attend in person because you never know what you’re going to find and who you’re going to see.”

Held in the community room on the second floor of the Ore Dock Brewing Company, the show will feature about 10,000 physical media items, along with music-themed posters. The long-running music show is also co-run with Geoff Walker, who drives boxes of vinyl up from lower Michigan. This show's poster is designed by local artist Bradley Blair, known as @blairwich.project on Instagram. “The poster for this show has a spring theme with bees and sunflowers, really capturing the season,” Teichman shares.

Beyond the records, the event will showcase live music throughout the weekend. On Thursday, March 27th, Sycamore Smith & The Death Bells, The God Eaters, and MKNAOMI will kick things off at 8 p.m. Friday evening brings Austin Castle and Friends for a free Americana show at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 29th, features indie artists Anise Star, Bimbo, and MRKT in a ticketed show at 8 p.m. The weekend wraps up Sunday with a pop culture trivia event at 2 p.m., alongside a Sunday morning cartoon screening at noon.

Teichman emphasizes the show’s welcoming atmosphere, where attendees of all musical tastes and knowledge levels are encouraged to ask questions and explore new genres. “We really work against that record store elitism,” he says. “All tastes are welcome—from ABBA to Zappa.”

The NMU Vinyl Record Club plays an active role in the event, from spreading the word to assisting with setup. The club also helps rehome donated records, ensuring music continues to find new listeners. “It’s really about sharing a love of physical media,” Teichman says.

Teichman stopped by the Public Radio 90 studios to talk with Kurt Hauswirth and share more show information with listeners:

The four-day show starts on Thursday, March 27th. Sunday will feature morning cartoons and pop culture trivia.

For those eager to keep the vinyl spirit alive year-round, Teichman also runs The Emporium on 3rd, a music and media shop now open Wednesday through Sunday at 816 N. 3rd Street.

Kurt lives in Marquette with his family and can’t imagine living anywhere else. He loves music, games, jogging, being near water, and a fine cold brew coffee.
