A conversation with pianist Bob Buchkoe

Driven by a desire to support the people of Ukraine following the invasion four years ago, Marquette-area pianist Bob Buchkoe has spent years meticulously preparing a unique classical benefit concert. Scheduled for Friday, June 12, at 7:00 PM at Messiah Lutheran Church, the event features admission by free-will donation to raise both critical funds and community awareness for those affected by the conflict. Buchkoe quietly worked away on an array of Ukrainian classical compositions over the years, gradually weaving together a performance that transforms artistic expression into tangible humanitarian relief.

The carefully curated program bridges instrumental mastery and vocal harmony, featuring a small regional choir alongside Buchkoe’s solo piano performances. The vocal ensemble will perform the Ukrainian national anthem, the original non-holiday version of the iconic melody known as "Carol of the Bells," and a moving prayer by Mykola Lysenko. For his solo repertoire, Buchkoe selected diverse works ranging from Viktor Kosenko’s technically demanding children's pieces to a thrillingly complex composition by Leo Ornstein, an avant-garde twentieth-century composer who later lived out his days in Wisconsin.

Public Radio 90's Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Buchkoe about the concert:

This musical collection reflects a deep engagement with European classical traditions, offering local listeners a profound look into the rich, resilient cultural DNA of Ukraine. Beyond the artistic display, the evening serves a direct humanitarian purpose, with all collected offerings going to a highly-rated charity focused on medical aid and first responders on the front lines. The concert invites the Marquette community to reconnect with a crisis that still demands global attention, using the power of music to provide vital, life-saving support.
