The Marquette Choral Society is gearing up for its Fall 2026 season, inviting community singers of all skill levels across the Upper Peninsula to participate. Led by Northern Michigan University Director of Choirs Dr. Erin Colwitz, the ensemble offers an inclusive environment with no formal audition required.
Registration and Schedule
- Registration: Monday, August 24, and Monday, August 31, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the lobby outside Room 250 of NMU's Thomas Fine Arts Building.
- Rehearsals: Mondays at 7:00 PM following registration.
- Concerts: Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6, 2026, in Reynolds Recital Hall.
The fall program brings together an eclectic, international selection of holiday music designed to span multiple traditions:
- The Gloria movement from Antonín Dvořák’s "Mass in D," sung in Latin with organ accompaniment by Jan Brodersen.
- Roger Emerson’s arrangement of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
- Global seasonal selections, including a Haitian Noël, traditional Hebrew works, and Hanukkah pieces.
Public Radio 90's Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Colwitz about Marquette Choral Society:
With membership reaching upwards of 180 vocalists in recent seasons, the choir balances seasoned community veterans with first-time singers. Rehearsal plans are distributed a week in advance to streamline learning and reduce pressure on newcomers. In addition to developing vocal skills and sight-reading abilities, the weekly gatherings serve as an intentional respite for personal wellness and local community connection.
