Originating from a daily writing meditation by director Maria Formolo several years ago, the collaborative performance "Between Wind and Feather" explores the gentle, often overlooked spaces that exist within modern life. Rather than serving as a standard dance recital, the piece treats Formolo’s spoken words as an active musical instrument, seamlessly weaving text alongside live grand piano by Theresa Camilli and percussion from Carrie Biolo. Formolo steps into the role of director and writer for this project, guiding members of the TaMaMa Dance Company (Tara Middleton, Maggie Barch, and Marissa Marquardson) through an expressive, multi-sensory experience.
Built on years of shared creative history and mutual trust, the performance relies on intuitive, authentic movement rather than traditional dance genres or rigid choreography. The ensemble aims to transport the audience from their everyday routines into a sanctuary that touches on universal human experiences such as joy, sorrow, and the passing of seasons. To achieve this atmosphere, the team selected NMU's Reynolds Recital Hall for its warm space and grand piano, partnering again with lighting designer Vic Holliday to enhance the visual landscape.

The creators hope attendees walk away with a sense of inner peace, grace, and optimism. The dynamic among the ensemble reflects deep artistic gratitude, with Formolo serving as a long-time mentor and the dancers embracing the opportunity to focus purely on physical interpretation under her direction. "Between Wind and Feather" takes place on Thursday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
