Renowned ceramic artist Patrick Dragon brings a masterfully refined technique to his craft, bridging the gap between abstraction and realism by painting directly with clay. Developed over decades, his approach utilizes micro-fine terra sigillata (a traditional liquid clay used historically to seal pottery before glazes existed) applied through absorbent paper onto dry vessel forms to produce striking geological textures. Dragon complements these abstract, organic surfaces with meticulously rendered realistic details like dragonflies or foliage, manipulating liquefied clays with palette knives and fine brushwork much like traditional oil or acrylic paint. While he maintains precise control during the initial layering and coloring stages, Dragon purposefully surrenders the artwork to chance during the final saggar firing in hardwood sawdust, allowing the fire and oxygen levels to imprint unpredictable shades of rich black, gray, and white. This balance of control and release reinforces his lifelong effort to help elevate ceramics to the status of fine art in the United States.
Dragon’s current exhibition represents a meaningful homecoming, tracing back to his upbringing on a farm in Skandia and his time at Northern Michigan University, where he earned his degree in 1974 through hard work and perseverance. Beyond his own studio work, Dragon has frequently served as a national juror for major craft shows, evaluating diverse art forms (from woodworking to jewelry) by focusing on universal design elements like line, color, and form. This commitment to artistic excellence aligns naturally with the vision of Zero Degrees Gallery, where Guest Artist Program Coordinator Marc Himes works to curate compelling showcases. Himes collaborates with gallery artists and regional exhibitions, such as the Northern Exposure competition in Escanaba, to select guest talent ranging from emerging regional voices to widely acclaimed masters, giving local audiences direct access to exceptional craftsmanship.
Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Dragon and Himes about the guest artist series:
The October showcase provides the Marquette community with multiple avenues to experience Dragon's work and story. An artist reception will take place at Zero Degrees Gallery on Saturday, October 10, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., allowing visitors to view his tactile ceramic vessels in person. Furthermore, Dragon will deliver a presentation on his career path, titled "From Skandia to the White House: How One Thing Leads to Another," on Tuesday, October 13, at the Peter White Public Library Community Room from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., featuring small ceramic keepsakes for attendees.
