U.P. recognized for its volunteer efforts

LANSING, MI--   The Upper Peninsula will be represented at the 2013 Governor’s Service Awards ceremony. 

The program honors the contributions made by Michigan volunteers.  Forty finalists from around the state will be recognized in eight categories. 

U.P. finalists include the Lake Superior Hospice Volunteer Program of Marquette, which uses more than 70 volunteers to help those diagnosed with terminal illnesses. 

Mary Amelia Yvonne Clark of Negaunee is being recognized as Senior Volunteer of the Year.  Clark began volunteering with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in 1994 and has since logged nearly 9,000 hours of service.  She also participates in several other volunteer opportunities, including the Red Cross Disaster Assistance Team.

Loren Smith of Sault Ste. Marie is being honored as a Volunteer of the Year.  Smith has been the volunteer transportation coordinator with the Chippewa/Luce/Mackinac County Department of Human Services office since 2001.  He has volunteered a total of 11,680 hours with the DHS and takes part in a variety of other volunteer events throughout the year. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
