ALPENA, MI (AP)--   Governor Rick Snyder has gone underwater to see Michigan history.

Snyder is a certified diver, and he put his skills to work Tuesday to explore a shipwreck Tuesday in Lake Huron off Alpena.

The dive happened as Snyder visited the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary off Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula, where there are many wrecks.

The Detroit News says the wooden vessel was built in 1872 and used to transport coal. It caught fire and sank in 18 feet of water in 1907.

Snyder tells TV station WDIV that "it was not a formula for success." Fortunately, the crew survived.

Snyder says the dive is "pure Michigan," a slogan used in the state's travel promotion program.
