Man who alerted residents to house fire given MSP Distinguished Citizen Award

CALUMET, MI— A Hancock man has been recognized for helping to save two people’s lives in a Chassell house fire earlier this year.

August 1 around 2 a.m., Gary Steinhoff was driving on US-41 in Chassell when he saw a fire outside a residence. As he drew closer, he realized the front porch was on fire.

Steinhoff stopped his vehicle and ran to the house. He tried to open the front door but couldn’t, so he started banging on windows and yelling to alert any residents inside.

The home’s two occupants woke up to the pounding and yelling. They escaped through a window at the back of the house.

For his lifesaving actions, Steinhoff was presented last week with the Michigan State Police Distinguished Citizen Award by Calumet Post Commander, F/Lt. Jason Wickstrom.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
