Snyder not ruling out vetoing bills until Senate votes on Medicaid expansion

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Governor Rick Snyder says he has many options on the table to pressure state Senators to return from their summer recess and vote to expand Medicaid in Michigan.  As Michigan Public Radio’s Jake Neher reports, that could include vetoing every bill that hits his desk until lawmakers take a vote.

The governor says he doesn’t plan to call a special legislative session over the issue. But he could take a page from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s book. She recently vetoed bills until state lawmakers there approved expanding Medicaid under the federal healthcare law.

Governor Snyder says that’s still an option.

“There’s a lot on the table," he says.  "We just want to get this done, because it’s about keeping Michiganders healthy.”

Snyder wants the Senate to take a vote on July 3rd. That’s the chamber’s next scheduled session day. But Republican leaders say they don’t plan to vote or take attendance. Senate Democrats say they’ll all be at the Capitol that day and ready to vote to expand Medicaid in Michigan.
