"Dream big," Schuette says at Marquette roundtable

MARQUETTE, MI--   Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette was in Marquette Monday to participate in a roundtable with business and community leaders.

The Republican, who recently announced he’s running for governor next year, said he wanted to know what they needed to be successful. Several people said the region needs a source of dependable, affordable energy.

Schuette said the U.P. needs to find a more local source through methods like fracking.

“Now we’re no longer reliant and have to be held hostage to Middle East sources of energy where sometimes the money we would pay would be used by terrorist groups to fight us because they have a value system that is different from ours in certain instances,” he said.

Schuette also said he thinks the future of Enbridge's Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac could include a type of tunnel that would house the pipeline, and at the same time monitor it for any problems.

The Attorney General said he's focused on employment. He wants to give every worker a raise, and he wants Michigan to be known as the “jobs state.”

“And I want to make sure you cop an attitude. When you leave here, you get this attitude that the mindset for Michigan has to be big dreams, bold hopes, and boundless aspirations,” he said.

Schuette then headed to Iron Mountain to tour Systems Control and Loadmaster in Norway. A grassroots rally will be held at Loadmaster at 6 p.m.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
