Bernie Sanders campaigns for Kamala Harris in Marquette

Anthony Reynolds

MARQUETTE, MI— Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders stumped for the Harris/Walz ticket in Marquette Sunday night.

The Independent spoke to about 1,000 people at Northern Michigan University. He said this presidential election could be decided by a few thousand votes.

“And as Michigan goes, it is likely the nation will go.”

Sanders said the wealthiest Americans increasingly control the economy as workers fall behind.

“Our challenge is to create an economy and our government that works for working people and not just the one percent.”

Sanders said Americans are angry about the housing crisis, lack of childcare, and the fact that 60 percent of people are living paycheck to paycheck.

The senator also said if former President Donald Trump is elected, worldwide efforts to stop climate change would be over.

“Because if the United States of America, the largest economy on earth, gives up the fight, China will give up the fight. Europe will give up the fight. And every country on the Earth will say, ‘Hey, the United States surrenders, so do we.’”
