Name of victim in Pictured Rocks fatality released

MUNISING, MI--   Officials have released additional details regarding a fatal fall at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Wednesday.

National Park Service officials say around 1:30 p.m. Tu Thanh Nguyen, 32, of Sunnyvale, California was hiking by herself on the North Country Trail. She stopped about a half-mile east of Grand Portal Point to take pictures of herself when she fell about 200 feet off the cliff edge to Lake Superior.

The fall was witnessed by two kayakers. They retrieved Nguyen and got her to shore near Chapel Beach. A local kayak company then radioed for emergency services. The National Park Service, Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger County EMS, and the U.S. Coast Guard personnel responded in a coordinated recovery effort.

The fall is considered to be an accident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
