Straits tunnel a no-go, environmental group says

ANN ARBOR, MI (MPRN)--   Environmental groups are stepping up their concerns about a potential plan to build a tunnel to house a controversial oil pipeline that passes through the Straits of Mackinac.

In Lansing Monday Sean McBrearty with the group Clean Water Action attacked the idea of building a tunnel.

“Building a tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac would not only be unnecessary, and take too long to complete, it would also come with a significant risk of explosion.  If electrical utility lines run through the tunnel as well, everything needed to create a massive explosion under the Straits would be present.”

Environmental groups predict Governor Snyder will announce a tunnel plan soon.

A governor’s spokesman would only say they are “reviewing studies and working through all possible options.”
