Special Programs:

Wind & Rhythm: Memorialize

Monday 5/31 @10am

Music gives us a chance to express ourselves when we need help dealing with difficult emotions. It gives our minds a place to face all of the feelings associated with life and death. Without music, dealing with the gravity of death in a war setting is almost too much to consider. And when war-like activities mimic battlefield conditions it takes powerful music to help us cope. The holiday we celebrate has a specific scope. Decoration Day became Memorial Day and it honors combat heroes who died on the field of battle. We can’t repay them for their sacrifice but we can be diligent in honoring them. If they were able to tell us about duty and responsibility we would be humbled beyond measure.

Alan Seeger: Instrument of Destiny

Monday 5/31 @11am

From the trenches of The Great War, Alan Seeger's poems, letters and diaries spring to life, in the voices of Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine. Recorded just before lockdown in the Cathedral, Patrick Zimmerli's new oratorio "Alan Seeger: Instrument of Destiny" fuses Seeger's formal writing with 20th Century music. Scott Simon hosts this moving hour of tribute to all those who saw combat, and those who awaited them at home.

Memorial Day Memories

Monday 5/31 @10pm

Tuesday 6/1 @5am

From the series The Apple Seed, this special Memorial Day episode brings you stories from the Civil War and both World Wars. These stories help us remember and appreciate the sacrifices of the men and women who have served so that we can enjoy our freedoms.

The Great American Songbook Memorial Day Special

Monday 5/31 @11pm

Phil Furia brings you songs from the home front to the foxholes of World War II by some of America's greatest composers and lyricists. Produced at WHQR.

Kurt lives in Marquette with his family and can’t imagine living anywhere else. He loves music, games, running, being near water, and a fine cold brew coffee.
