ISHPEMING, MI— The Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority is holding a public hearing Wednesday on two Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund applications.

The authority is applying for a proposed land acquisition grant for 176 acres in Marquette and Negaunee Townships. The second grant application is for the development of a five-mile extension of the trail to Lakenenland in Chocolay Township.

The first project would open up private land to public use by creating a single-track park for hikers, mountain bikers, snowshoers and fat tire bikers. Possession of the Chocolay property would allow the authority to build a limestone trail within the Soo Line state-owned corridor to provide a connection to the highly popular metal art sculpture park.

A hearing on the applications is being held Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Ishpeming Senior Center.
