GRAND ISLAND, MI— Changes are being made on Grand Island, thanks to the Great American Outdoors Act.
The Hiawatha National Forest says the island’s Staircase Replacement Project got underway on June 10th. Staircases at Waterfall and Mather beaches are being removed and converted into viewing platforms. In 2018 and 2019, those locations suffered significant shoreline erosion due to historically high lake levels and storms and have been closed since.
The staircase at Hemlock Beach will be removed and a new one installed.
These and surrounding areas may be affected by temporary administrative closures throughout summer and early fall to provide space for construction crews.
