Kids Cove to hold soft opening Friday evening in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette’s new Kids Cove playground at Mattson Lower Harbor Park will finally open for all types of kids to have fun Friday evening.

Officials say the all-inclusive design is simple, understandable, and safe for all users. Kids Cove features eight play zones and a surface that minimizes injuries. The equipment allows easier sight of vision for grandparents, parents, and caregivers.

The $1.7 million playground honors Joani Reynolds Miller, a retired preschool teacher who had a vision of making life for children with disabilities more inclusive in the community.

The City of Marquette will unlock the Kids Cove gate for a soft opening after a dragonfly sculpture designed by Brian Wignall is installed Friday evening. The City will hold a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony in mid-October.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
