New Negaunee playground officially open

NEGAUNEE, MI— The City of Negaunee and Lake Superior Community Partnership celebrated the completion of the Jackson Mine Park Playground with a ribbon-cutting Wednesday.

Officials say the playground, located between Tobin Street and the Jim Thomas Pavilion, offers a thoughtfully designed space where families can gather, and parents can easily keep an eye on their children during events and activities at the pavilion.

The project stemmed from a DNR Trust Fund grant for the pavilion in 2017. A group of residents started exploring the potential of building a playground next to the structure. Another MDNR Trust Fund Grant got the process started.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation partnered with the city for a crowdfunding campaign through Patronicity. The campaign raised over $50,000 from the community, which the MEDC matched for a total of $100,000. The Negaunee Lions Club also donated $10,000 from the Lions Community Enrichment Fund.
