MARQUETTE, MI— Storms that hit the western U.P. over the past week have made snowmobile trails in portions of six counties impassable.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says freezing rain, followed by heavy snow and gusting winds, knocked trees and limbs onto trails in Ontonagon, Iron, Gogebic, Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties.
Officials say more than two feet of snow fell in the Trap Hills in Ontonagon County and along the South Boundary Road at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
Portions of some trails have been cleared, but there is a good deal more work to be done. Snowmobile clubs and the DNR are working to have the trails cleared as soon as possible.
