Man rescued after he falls down Mackinac Island cliff

Mackinac Island Fire Department

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI— Firefighters on Mackinac Island rescued a man who fell down a cliff on Sunday and had a possible broken arm.

Crews and EMS were dispatched just before 2 p.m. They were told while enroute that the man was slipping and couldn’t hold on much longer.

One squad went to the top of the cliff to prepare for technical line rescue while a second squad went to the base of the cliff to attempt to reach the man from the road.

Firefighter Joshua Carley climbed the ladder and rescued the man, who was turned over to EMS. He remains in stable condition.

The man told officials he had “about 10 seconds left before letting go.”

The Mackinac Island Police Department assisted at the scene, as did personnel from the Department of Public Works, who were instrumental in spotting the man on the cliff.

While climbing on the cliffs of Mackinac is prohibited, this is the second rescue this year and the 10th in the last 15 years.
