Two men rescued from capsized sailboat near Shot Point, Chocolay Township

MARQUETTE, MI— Two people were rescued from Lake Superior near Marquette after their sailboat capsized Thursday evening.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 6:30 p.m. to an area near Shot Point.

Deputies say two brothers were sailing from Shot Point to Marquette’s Lower Harbor and back when a gust of wind blew the boat over and damaged the hull. Both were wearing life jackets and were able to get on top of the overturned vessel. They had stored a cell phone in a dry bag and used it to call 911.

The Marquette City Fire Department deployed a jet ski and found the men, and U.S. Coast Guard Marquette took the victims on board.
One of the men was taken to shore, while the boat owner stayed with deputies to tow the sailboat back to land.

The Chocolay Township Fire Department and Marquette Township Fire Department assisted in the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding people always to wear a life jacket when recreating on the water.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
