CLEVELAND, OH— The U.S. Coast Guard is warning the public about unsafe ice conditions on the Great Lakes.
On Monday, Coast Guard boat and air crews rescued 25 people from two separate ice floes off Wisconsin and Michigan. Station Sturgeon Bay crew members responded to 11 people stranded on an ice floe off Sherwood Point, Wisconsin. And Coast Guard crews from Station Saginaw River, Air Station Detroit and Air Station Traverse City rescued 14 people on an ice floe and in the water off Sebewaing.
Officials say before heading out onto the water, take precautions, not chances. Survival time is greatly diminished in cold water. Dress for the water temperatures. Always tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back, and never leave without a VHF-FM radio or personal locator beacon.
