DNR warning swimmers about dangerous waters with red flags

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

LANSING, MI— If you see two red flags at Great Lakes beaches, don’t enter the water.

It’s a change to the Great Lakes flag warning system that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources began using last year at several state parks.

DNR Parks and Recreation Chief Ron Olson says many people don’t realize how quickly even experienced swimmers can find themselves in a life-threatening situation in the Great Lakes. He says 108 people drowned in the Lakes last year alone.

So, if you’re at a Michigan state park and see double red flags, that means you’re not allowed to enter the water from the beach because of dangerous conditions.

The restriction does not include those participating in board sports, such as surfing, kite surfing and skim boarding, with appropriate safety gear.
