Crews to conduct fire training at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport

KI SAWYER, MI— Firefighters are conducting live fire training exercises at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport Monday and Tuesday.

The “Hot Drill” training by the Airport Rescue Firefighters is an annual requirement set by the FAA to ensure readiness and safety in aviation emergencies.

Using specialized propane-fueled equipment, the training will simulate aircraft and large jet fuel fires. Due to the high risk of wildland fire, the exercises will be carried out in a highly controlled and safe environment on the airport's commercial apron.

Participants include crews from the Delta County Airport, Houghton County Airport, Ford Airport, Ironwood Airport, and the Chippewa County Airport. Monday evening, members of the Forsyth Township, Sands, Skandia-West Branch, and Tri-Township Fire Departments and Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Technical Rescue Unit 131 will also join the training.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
