Search exercise brings together 3 rescue groups in Houghton County

Superior Search & Rescue

HOUGHTON, MI— Superior Search and Rescue of Houghton joined other agencies in a mock searching exercise in the Copper Country on Saturday.

The exercise involved a trained survivalist who acted as a vulnerable adult walking away from the Canal View skilled nursing center in Houghton.

Baraga County Search and Rescue and Marquette County Search and Rescue were also part of the event. All three teams utilized ground teams, unmanned aerial vehicles and K-9 units to search for the participant acting as the subject.

They located the subject about 4.4 miles northeast of the facility.

It was the final exercise in Superior SAR’s revamped training program. Members train twice monthly in classroom and field exercises across the region in various topics and skills to support a field operation.

Integrating other teams was also a major priority to see how each team interacts and how to better improve for future response. The future goal is to have twice-yearly search exercises with various teams in the Upper Peninsula.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
