Partnership with Northern renames sled dog race 'UP200 Powered by NMU'

MARQUETTE, MI— Beginning this year, the sled dog race that starts and finishes in Marquette and serves as an Iditarod qualifier is officially known as the “UP200 Powered by NMU.”

Officials say the university’s partnership with the UP Sled Dog Association enhances volunteer and service-learning opportunities for students, faculty, and staff, and elevates the race's branding and marketing efforts.

The UP200 will be held February 17th in downtown Marquette. Earlier that day, NMU will unveil a professionally made sled dog snow sculpture and a McMillan, Michigan musher will hold a demonstration.

The weekend will also feature the Midnight Run, which goes to Chatham and returns to Marquette, and the Jack Pine 30, which begins and ends in Gwinn.

More information is at www.up200.org.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
