Northern football player drafted by Indianapolis Colts

Northern Michigan University

MARQUETTE, MI— An NMU football player is headed to the NFL.

Offensive tackle Jake Witt was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, pick 236 overall.

Witt spoke with 31 of 32 NFL teams in some capacity, visiting nine. He participated in a private workout with the Colts.

In two seasons with the Wildcats, Witt started all 22 games, playing nine at tight end before shifting to offensive tackle due to injuries against eventual national champion Ferris State.

The 6’7” Witt went to Ewen-Trout Creek school. He played one season of basketball at Michigan Tech, then transferred to Northern in 2019. Witt joined the NMU football team as a walk-on in the spring of 2020.

NFL scouts apparently took notice of Witt in 2021 while watching films of opposing players.

Witt is the first Wildcat to be drafted since Mark Maddox was taken by the Buffalo Bills 32 years ago.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
