MARQUETTE, MI— Race officials have canceled this year’s Mommaerts and Mahaney Financial Services Noquemanon Ski Marathon.
In a press release Thursday, Race Director Jason Rolling said the area doesn’t have enough snow—or a quality base—upon which to safely cover rock outcroppings and set consistent classic track for an event of that size. He said with more than 800 racers registered, course safety would deteriorate within the first 100 racers.
Officials said no impactful snow that would resolve current trail conditions is in the extended forecast.
“It is humbling how many sponsors, volunteers and participants support this race each year. We would like to encourage skiers to come and experience all the things perhaps you haven’t been able to do in the past. Our downtown areas of Marquette, Ishpeming and Negaunee all have plenty of dining experiences. Our ski trails are open, and a full weekend of skiing is very attainable. Think about heading up to the Big Bay Trails, the Saux Head Trails or over to Valley Spur in Munising." said Nicole Swenson, Race Coordinator.
The release stated, “As the Race Committee prepared for the 2025 marathon, we paid a great deal of attention to the safety of our volunteers, our racers, our team, and the safety of our course options. It is important to the Race Committee that should any of these things come into question we would err on the side of caution to ensure the Noquemanon Ski Marathon’s legacy was one of healthy enjoyment of a sport and trail system we love.”
The 27th Noquemanon Ski Marathon was slated to take place January 25.
