CALUMET, MI— Trails are looking great for the upcoming CopperDog sled dog races in the Keweenaw at the end of the month.
Race Director Kelly Probst doesn’t anticipate any problems with the courses, as snow continues to fall and temperatures hold. She says about 71 mushers have signed up for the four races, which means about 600 dogs will converge in the area, as well.
Probst says the CopperDog is one of the premiere events that takes place in the Keweenaw each year.
“It comes at a time in the winter where the tourism business is kind of winding down, so it’s like an extra shot in the arm for all the businesses and the locals up here.”
The CopperDog 150, 80, and 30 races begin Friday, February 28 in Calumet and finish in Eagle Harbor late Friday/early Saturday morning.
Race officials are looking for volunteers to help out with various activities. More information is at www.copperdog.org.
