Winter tourism will need to have a different look, MEDC chief says

MARQUETTE, MI— The executive director of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation says Upper Peninsula tourism businesses will have to pivot to stay viable in a changing environment.

Quentin Messer was in Marquette Thurs. He said the MEDC understands tourism and hospitality are vitally important to the area.

Several U.P. businesses severely affected by lack of snow this season have asked the state for help. Messer said the MEDC and Small Business Development Center have established a U.P. Tourism Task Force to help companies venture into opportunities that aren’t as snow-dependent.

“…but can take advantage of the natural scenic beauty, can take advantage of the fact that, you know, some people just want to get back to nature. Some people want to sort of retreat. Is there opportunity for us to help companies, help these businesses get into the growing health and wellness tourism market sector?”

Messer noted the situation is a work in progress. He said anything that’s decided will have to be sustainable, because the weather likely will not be our friend moving forward.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
