What I Hope to Discover in Scotland…

What I Hope to Discover in Scotland…
By Station Manager Evelyn Massaro

The only time I have ever traveled overseas is when I won a trip for two to London in a trivia contest back in 1988.  My husband Dave and I originally had plans to fly to London and then travel through Ireland and Scotland by train.  Unfortunately we ran out of cash before we made it out of London so we never made it to Scotland.

I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to be able to discover Scotland with other Public Radio 90 listeners next April.  I’m so excited I already have my suitcase nearly packed.

While the entire tour is jam packed with all kinds of interesting activities, there are a few things I’m really looking forward to:

Eating my way up one side of Scotland and down the other.   I’m going to try every Scottish dishes I can’t pronounce and more like Forfar Bridie (a meat pastry), Cock-a-leekie (soup), Collops (escalope), Crappit heid (fish dish), Finnan haddie (haddock fish), Arbroath Smokie (smoked haddock), Cullen Skink (haddock soup), Partan bree (seafood dish), Mince and tatties (minced meat and potatoes), Rumbledethumps ( potatoes, turnips, cabbage and cheese) and Skirlie (onion, butter, toasted oatmeal and parsley)  Oh and I can’t forget the Haggis, which I hear comes in several varieties including vegetarian Haggis.

Exploring the many bicycle paths around Edinburgh during our leisure time and hopefully checking out some of the lochs in the area.    Being an avid bicyclist I’m also hoping to also make a stop at Ronde Cycle Café, a bicycle shop that combines road, sportive, urban and 29er bicycles, clothing and accessories, photography, films, magazines and books… AND I hear serves great coffee too.

Discovering Skara Brae, the Neolithic Village located on the Orkney Islands which was uncovered during a storm in 1850 is what I’m most looking forward to.   It’s amazing to see what people were able to build without power tools.  I visited Mesa Verde National Park several years ago out in Colorado, which is the largest archaeological preserve in the United States.  It has over four thousand archaeological sites and over six hundred cliff dwellings of the Pueblo and it is magnificent!  If it’s anything close to that you’ll have to drag me out of there.

April seems so far away now, but it will be here in no time.  I sure hope you’ll join us for this wonderful travel opportunity.  To book your seat contact Holiday Travel Vacations in Marquette 800-562-9767.
