Deer check stations ready for action

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says deer check stations are ready for firearm deer hunting season.

There are 15 stations across the U.P. where hunters can voluntarily bring their deer.  Biologists will check the age and health of the animal and note where it was harvested.

DNR deputy public information officer John Pepin says some really nice deer were checked during the archery season.  He says hunters think last year’s heavy snowfall, which prevented some from reaching their camps, may have saved some older bucks from being harvested.

To locate the closest deer check station go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.  The website also contains information on preventing chronic wasting disease from entering the U.P.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
