Hug an owl, help the Harbor House

MARQUETTE, MI--   Residents have a chance to snuggle a snowy owl and help out the Marquette Women’s Center Harbor House at the same time.

The Chocolay Raptor Center is holding an online auction for the privilege of holding a rehabilitated owl, then releasing it back into the wild.

Money raised through the auction will be used to make repairs at the Harbor House, which shelters victims of domestic violence.

Raptor center co-founder Jerry Maynard says the winner will have to go to the center in Harvey and be taught how to handle the large bird.

“They’ll do that by handling our resident great horned owl.  So the winner will actually get to handle two owls," he says.

The release is scheduled for Sunday, April 3.  The winner will have his or her photo taken with the owl and press will be at the event.

Maynard says donating to the Raptor Center is valuable, but handling an owl is priceless.
