SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)-- The Aquatic Research Laboratory at Lake Superior State University is celebrating three decades of raising and releasing Atlantic salmon in the St. Marys River.
A 30th anniversary program is scheduled for Friday at the Cloverland Electric Cooperative power plant and Alford Park in Sault Ste. Marie.
It will include the release of this year's group of nearly 37,000 salmon yearlings. All have been identified with a right pelvic fin clip.
Lab officials say they hope to hear from anglers who catch the salmon so they can continue documenting where the fish show up in the upper Great Lakes and beyond.
The university is renovating a building at the power plant to be the new home for the lab, which will be called the LSSU Center for Freshwater Research and Education.
