Ontonagon man named Conservationist of the Year

HERMANSVILLE, MI--   The Upper Peninsula Sportsmen’s Alliance has named J.R. Richardson of Ontonagon Conservationist of the Year.

Richardson was appointed to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission in 2007 and is the only U.P. representative on the commission. He was recognized for his work in increasing fishing and trapping opportunities, his leadership with the U.P. Deer Habitat Workgroup, and his creation of the U.P. Chronic Wasting Disease Task Force, among other activities.

Richardson holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Michigan Tech. He’s received numerous awards and accolades and is a member of several sportsmen’s groups.

The Outstanding Conservationist Award was presented Saturday at a quarterly UPSA meeting in Hermansville.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
