SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A pair of nesting peregrine falcons has returned to the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie to raise a family.
Officials say they’ve apparently decided to maintain dual residency, feathering their nest on the U.S. side of the span after nesting on the Canadian side last year. The falcons have laid three eggs in a nest box.
The boxes were installed on the bridge in 2010, placed at locations that had evidence of past nesting activity. Last year, the resident pair of peregrines hatched four chicks. Over the years, 39 falcon chicks have hatched since IBA staff started counting the birds.
