DNR has tips for keeping bears away from human activity

GLADSTONE, MI— The Department of Natural Resources has received reports of a bear and cubs in the Gladstone area.

Officials are reminding residents of ways to be “bear-wise.” They say never feed or approach bears; secure food, garbage, and recycling; remove bird feeders when bears are active; never leave pet food outdoors; clean and store grills; and alert your neighbors to bear activity.

If you see a bear before it sees you, stand still, then slowly move away. If a bear sees you, back away slowly. Never run, as that may trigger a chase response. If a bear approaches, hold your ground, wave your arms, and yell “Hey bear” until it leaves.
