Presque Isle Park road closes for blue-spotted salamander

MARQUETTE, MI— The City of Marquette is closing off a portion of Presque Isle Park for about a month to let the blue-spotted salamander breed safely.

The small amphibians migrate each spring from the Island’s woods to vernal pools to reproduce.

The southwest bend of the roadway from the Ice Cream Store Pavilion to the gate north of the pavilion will close to vehicles daily at 8 p.m. starting March 17. It will last through May 15 or until the completion of the migration.

Road barricades will be placed and removed daily to prevent traffic from using roads in the migration area. Foot traffic will be allowed during regular park hours.

For more information, call the Superior Watershed Partnership at 906-228-6095.
